Todays technology has bridged the gap between a PDA and a smartphone.
BAck in the day,
PDA’s we only for business folks, and the device could only take calendar notes, address contacts, meeting schedules. The displays were not even colored.
Smart phones were mostly for everybody, and also had PDA-like features.
Today, a PDA and a smartphone can only be distinguished by maybe the software/operating system on them, or advanced mobile features such as GPS, touchscreen.
Smartphone run OS’s like Symbian, Linux etc
small screen size: ranging from 176 x 208 etc
brands like Nokia, Sonyericsson, etc
PDA mostly run- Palm, Linux Windows CE, Windows Mobile
screen size: ranging from 240 x 320 etc
brands like HTC, Palm, etc
Well 7 years ago we started seeing smart phone pop up. A smart phone is a PDA phone combo. They were mostly palm OS. A few years later we started seeing smaller phones on the market that had no touch screen. We then called those smart phones and the touch screen phones were referred to as Palm phones or Pocket PC phones. Some manufactures still referred to the touch screen phones as smart phones. This caused a lot of confusion. A few years later consumers, developers and manufactures began to follow the lead of article writers who finally set specific criteria to categorize what was what. So now all phones that have a calendar, contact manager, calculator, web browser, email client, alarm program, file manager, document program, task list, picture viewer, and media player is a smart phone. But there are several different types of smart phones. A windows mobile professional phone has a touch screen. W windows mobile classic device has no phone but has a touch screen. A windows mobile standard phone has no touch screen. A palm OS phone has a touch screen and then there are the sidkicks, blackberries, Nokias and so on and so forth………….. So if they have the programs mentioned they are PDA phones or you could call it a smart phones. So a smart phone is a Personal Digital Assistant phone.
