PDAxtreme

my old phone is shot, but i dont want to sign a new 2 yr contract to get a better phone. my old rate plan does not exist anymore and i do not want to pay for a data plan. will a pda or blacberry work if i only have a talk airtime plan? or will verizon know it is a pda when i switch the phones over?
