Open Question: why is my dell axim x5 randomly crashing?

I recently inherited my dad’s old dell axim x5 pocket pc and of course it has problems (like every other hand-me-down electronic I get). in this case it randomly crashes when you open certain applications it will freeze up. turning it off and then back on doesn’t help ether. the only way to get it to work again is to remove the battery and put it back on. after that a message comes up asking you to press one button to wipe the memory or the other button to not wipe the memory. unless you wipe the memory it freezes at the dell logo screen. if you do wipe the memory it works fine until the next time you open something it doesn’t like. I’m looking for an easy or inexpensive fix but if there is none I would still like to know what is wrong with it and if there is any fix at all.
