I know smartphones require that horrendous data plan from most cell phone providers. My question is, can I use a smart phone (like the Google Nexus) purely for voice and texting, if I don’t purchase the data plan?

Additionally, I haven’t been able to find pre-paid cards that allow Smartphone users to purchase the data-plan in any form. Do they exist?

*For those that don’t know, let me clear up what I mean by Data-Plan. Most cell phone companies offer services in this order.

You can get voice. For an additional charge you can get unlimited texting. For another charge you can use the internet and browse the web. HOWEVER, if you use a smartphone, you are required to purchase an additional data/pda plan (such as the Iphone) which they will tell you is so you can receive alerts to your phone for your email in real-time on your phone (however you can setup most emails to send you a text nowdays for free), but is actually for the increased amount of bandwidth you may use on your phone.

So with that understanding, when I refer to data-plan, I am not talking about the “basic” internet option that comes on non-smartphones (and now multimedia phones)
