Nokia 5230 review Foot soldiers get smarter

December 13, 2009

“When touchscreen handsets start to take over the lower segments of the market you know the rules of the game have changed. The Nokia 5230 is a smartphone but it doesn’t mind rubbing shoulders with the common run of handsets. So, it’s free to explore grounds where few smartphones have ever gone, let alone full touchscreen gadgets. The land of affordability was the last territory for touchscreen phones to settle in and not quite the place smartphones would call home. So it was, but Nokia just won’t wait for a special invitation when a niche is wide open. And they’ve got quite a fleet already of low key touchscreen smartphones that’s certain to make an impact. The Nokia 5530 XpressMusic had a great bang for the buck and the 5230 is welcome to try and beat the bargain. Cheap is nice but free is even better – and we guess the 5230 will be available both ways through retail stores and carriers. But let’s see what it has and what’s been left out. ” Read more here:

Nexus One, The Google Phone, Captured In The Wild (Picture)

December 13, 2009

“Apparently, Googlers aren’t supposed to be tweeting the details of the Google Phone, but they have no problem tweeting about how awesome it is. And they also apparently have no problem showing it off. And not surprisingly, pictures of the device are starting to hit the web. Without further ado, this is it.Cory O’Brien, a San Francisco-based blogger, got his hands on one tonight and tweeted out that picture. He also notes that, “Google Phone = iPhone + a little extra screen and a scroll wheel. Great touch screen, and Android.”As you can see, the Google Phone, which is apparently being called the “Nexus One” (for more on that, see here), does look exactly like the HTC Passion, which everyone was including in their posts earlier. You’ll also notice that there’s a key difference: It’s not HTC-branded at all.” via techcrunch.com

Resolved Question: Is the iPod Touch 8g large enough?

December 13, 2009

Despite thinking that Apple is the devil company, I’m caving and getting an iPod Touch because it does what I need a PDA to do. But I don’t know which size to choose. I won’t be storing songs, movies, or pictures but I will be downloading medical software (programs like ePocrates and Brenner’s Pharma flashcards), storing a couple of audio lectures here and there, and downloading various apps for personal use (can’t tell you which because I don’t know yet). Is the 8G large enough for this? There’s a huge price difference between the 8G and next smallest (32G), and I’m on a student budget … enough said?
Emma T: I’m in the U.S. We *used* to have 16GB, but Apple rolled out a new generation this summer and cut 16GB out entirely. It’s probably a marketing strategy since no one would buy the more expensive 32GB if they could get lesser-priced and reasonably-sized 16GB. Yet another reason why Apple is an awful company, but I won’t get on a soapbox here.
Thanks SavedByGrace: don’t take offense to me calling Apple “the devil company” or “awful” - maybe the iPod Touch will sway me? =P
