Palm pixi will debu in mid november for 100 dollars

The Palm Pixi, the second webOS-powered smartphone, will hit store shelves in a few weeks. As expected, this smartphone will have an entry-level price, making it more affordable than its predecessor, the Palm Pre.This device will have a different design from the first webOS model – a tablet shape, with a small keyboard fixed below its capacitive touchscreen. It is going to be released exclusively by Sprint, who will charge $100 with a two-year contract and $100 mail-in rebate. The Pixi will be released on November 15, and will be be available at Sprint stores, sprint.com, 1-800-SPRINT1, and at Best Buy, RadioShack and select Wal-Mart stores. It will come with a highly-capable web browser, email software, and multimedia player. Additional third-party applications will also be available. The Pixi’s 2.6-inch, 320-by-400-pixel, capacitive touchscreen will be smaller and have a lower resolution screen than the current model. As mentioned earlier, this will be the second smartphone running Palm’s webOS, a multi-tasking operating system able to wirelessly synchronize a wide variety of data with online services like Google, Facebook, and Microsoft Exchange.Sprint’s version of the Pixi will include EV-DO mobile broadband. It will also have Bluetooth, but not Wi-Fi.”Simply put, this phone is fun and easy to use; with its multi-touch screen and full QWERTY keyboard, it’s a great device for messaging and social networking at a price everyone can enjoy, and delivers so many of the great features people love about Palm Pre in a fantastic new form factor,” said Kevin Packingham, senior vice president – Product Development, Sprint. It won’t replace the Palm Pre in Sprint’s product lineup – rather it will be a second option.” via brighthand.com

“According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, global mobile handset shipments fell 4 percent year-over-year, to reach 291 million units in Q3 2009. The rate of decline was slower than the previous quarter, as the market edged toward recovery. We forecast the handset industry to return to positive growth in the fourth quarter of 2009, signaling an end to the recession. Bonny Joy, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics said, “Global mobile handset shipments fell to 291 million units during Q3 2009, down 4 percent from 304 million units in Q3 2008. The four-percent shrinkage was a noticeable improvement on the average decline of 11 percent recorded during the previous three quarters between Q4 2008 and Q2 2009. The handset market is edging toward recovery.”  Read more inside..

Sprint Palm Pixi unboxed on video

“Unboxing videos: the Internet’s great tease to technology lovers. WireFly are our tormentors today, and they’ve got a brand-spankin’ new Sprint Palm Pixi to undress. At 8:16 long, it seems like a bit of overkill for an unboxing video, but hey! Why not go all-out, says us. No new footage of the Facebook app or Yahoo messenger integration (yet) unfortunately, but we’ll be watching WireFly closely. In the meantime… feast your eyes! via palminfocenter.com

Gartner Q3 2009 Smartphone Sales Figures

“Worldwide mobile phone sales totalled 308.9 million units in the third quarter of 2009, a 0.1 per cent increase from the third quarter of 2008, according to Gartner, Inc. Smartphone sales surpassed 41 million units, a 12.8 per cent increase from the same period last year.“The third quarter of 2009 saw the announcement of many new mobile devices, including several Android smartphones ready for the holiday season in the fourth quarter, but hardware commoditisation and the growth in open platforms will make it harder for them to stand out,” said Carolina Milanesi, research director at Gartner. “Meanwhile, the channel slowed its inventory-reduction efforts so while some sales volumes increased, average selling prices (ASPs) stagnated. We expect pressure on ASP to continue into 2010.” “Many devices will reach the market in time for Christmas, and mobile carriers will run incentives for consumers during the holidays. We expect sales of mobile devices in the fourth quarter of 2009 to show year-over-year growth,” said Ms Milanesi. ”As many vendors and industry watchers call for a decrease in sales into the channel, our sell through data is showing that 2009 performance will be flat rather than down over 2008.” Read more inside..
