A good part of Springsteen's appeal is that he both writes his songs and interprets other's in a way that makes them relate to the common woman and man out there. As you note, the "brat" bit only brings to the song a sense of "that happened to me" or even a "I know someone going thru just precisely that".

The 'brat' part of the song just brings another piece humanity to the song. She is a single mom with a kid. Guys don't relate to kids so much so maybe he is jokingly referring to the 'brat' as a way to acknowledge the kid. Either way, it is a very poignant description of young love. Good stuff.

The problem I have with this version is the extra verse that Bruce adds. I just really think it ruins the whole mood of the song. Why did he feel the need to add a line about a "brat"? What does that add to the song?
